Cloverhill Golf Club - Father Pips Son for Last Monthly Medal
First out on Sunday morning young Christopher McKay (18) despite a horrible 8 at the opening hole returned a nett 67 to be the clubhouse leader. Throughout the morning as the wind changed direction to back nine was becoming extremely difficult and the 67 was looking good. A pair of 69's from Robbie Norton and Shane Collins were the nearest to come to leader Christopher until his dad stepped into the picture. Jim (7) out in level par began the back nine with three bogey's and picked up another one at the par thre sixteenth. It was the birdie at the penultimate hole which was to prove decisive as a bogey at the last hole gave him a gross 73 to end up eclipsing his sibling by a shot. Christopher with a medal already under his belt will not be too disappointed as next weeks final for the Gold medal gives him a chance for revenge. Joining the father and son in the final are Brendan Hughes, Sean Campbell, Seamie Fearon, Joe Hazzard and Brendan Byrne. The 7 finalists are to be ready to play at 9-30 on Sunday morning.
Next weekend is the last chance for those of us yet to reach the winners enclosure so that we will be able to take part in the Gerry McShane, Trinity Print, Carlingford sponsored end of season winners prize competition on Sunday week. For a lot of us it will be the last chance saloon competition that we will be playing in on Sunday week. The names for the Winter League are now being taken, so sign up quickly as it gets under way the first week in November.
The opening round of the Seniors Winter League took place on Thursday last. The early first round leaders were Anthony Murphy in Section One with John Byrne and Noel Magill leading the way in Section Two.
Our International Pairs representatives Steve O Hara and David Pilkington are off to Lough Erne this week to see if they can win the right to represent Ireland at the European finals. The club has also another team seeking All-Ireland glory at the K-Club this week in the Three T'S, prevention against suicide competition. Club Captains Anne Murphy and Nial Smyth team up with Paddy Malone and Colin Pilkington in this prestigious four person team event which also incorporates PGA professional golfers. Needless to say best of luck to both teams who have already carried the club colours with distinction in getting this far in these quality competitions.
