Cloverhill Golf Club - Winter League

The second week of the christmas fare combined with the individual and team Winter league certainly produced the scores for the 12 hole competetion. Matchplay champion Paddy Malone (12) was in sparkling form shooting one under par for a total of 33 points. Ollie Martin beat Liam Harte on the countback for second after both returned 31 points ahead of the chasing quartet of Brendan Tierney, Anthony Hillen, Shane Grant and Daniel Hughes who all had 30 points. The early individual leader is Brian Ryan with 57 points after the two rounds.Brian is one ahead of Anthony Hillen and Liam Harte with Stephen Markey and Decal O Neill a further point in arrears. The best 5 cards over the 7 weeks will count in the individual league. The best four out of the 7 cards in the team event will count each week in the team event. Daniel Hughes, Seamus McParland, Mark Hughes,Gene Hughes, Niall McEnaney and Declan O Neill lead the way in the team contest with 211 points.Stephen Campbell, Stephen Markey, Brendan Byrne, Larry O Rourke, James Coburn and Liam Harte are on 209 with the team of Eugene Byrne, Shane O Neill, Seamus Tumilty, Jim Conroy, Ollie Martin, Brian Ryan and Graham Johnston along with the team of Jim McKay, Patrick Malone, Vincie Gorman,Peter Byrne,Shane Muckian, Dermot Smyth and Colin Millar locked togeter in a 3 way tie on 207 pts with Shane Grant, Mark Conlon, Joe Carroll, Sean Conroy, Sean Moan and John Byrne. A point adrift in sixth place on 206 are Brendan Tierney, Anthony Hillen, Seamus McCoy , Frank McGovern, Raymond Flynn, Seamus Keenan and Brendan Heaney. With 5 weeks still left to play there will be a lot of changes to come but as previous years have shown a returned card with a small number of points on it can decide the overall outcome at the end of the contest. The popularity of the format for this competition has certainly gone down well with the members and has given those influx of new members who took up the special membership offers something to play for over the Winter months.


The draws for the GUI competitions are already at hand and the club will be in action on the following dates in 2011

As the year draws to a close members are reminded that all nominations for Committee must be submitted in writing a week prior to the Annual General Meeting which has broken protocol by being staged for the first time on a Sunday. Sunday Dec 5 at 2pm in the clubhouse should see the best attended AGM ever with the influx of new members and the continual growth of the club on an upward spiral in tough times.
