Cloverhill Golf Club - John Reel Wins Presidents Prize
Club president Seamus McCoy was favoured with a good morning as he hosted his big prize day on Sunday.
The early scores from the large turnout of members set the benchmark with first starter Michael McGuinness setting a target of 40 points to be bettered. Try as they might no one could match the early target until it was reeled in by one member John Reel who had an amazing opening nine holes. The 20 handicapper shot 7 pars a birdie and a bogey for a level par total of 27 points. The wheels came off the wagon over the next nine with a return of 17 points for a winning total of 44 points with Michael in second place and Charlie O Hare third on 38 points. It was a good day for the Reel brothers as Ollie won the front nine with 21 points the same total that won the back nine for Anthony Hillen.
The ladies winner was Ann McGivern with Anne Murphy in the runner-up spot. On Saturday Conor Hoey was the winner of the juvenile prize with Eoghan Burns and Conor McShane filling the minor places.
Sam Rutherford
Cloverhill are in a very good position to win the Sam Rutherford in the home return leg on Sunday October 5 following a terrific result at Lisburn. The club appearing in their first Ulster pennant final gave a tremendous display to come away from Lisburn on level terms after the 72 holes were played by the four pairs. The platform for this good result came from the opening pairing of Benny Tierney and Colin Pilkingto who were 8 hole victors in their match Lapses over the very tough last 3 finishing holes as the rain descended was to prove costly for the next three pairing who lost their matches. Sean Campbell and David Pilkington lost by two holes with Paul Owens and Michael McEntegart plus Frank Quinn and Jim McKay losing out by three to leave matters level for the return leg. No doubt this was a result that team captain Joe Pilkington was delighted with in front of a very large appreciative home crowd who witnessed some great golf especially from our first pairing.
Seniors Big Day
The Senior section of the club held their annual prize giving dinner on Thursday. Chief organiser Noel Williams had organised a 12 hole competition for members and visitors prior to the meal. This proved to be a very wise choice as the golf had no sooner finished than the never ending rain began. The section one winner on the day was Pius Tierney followed home by Vincie Gorman. Section two was won by Brendan Brown with Brian Ryan runner-up. The visitors prize went to Gerry Smith (Killin Park) with nearest the pin going to Vincie Gorman and the longest drive to Frank Ryan (Mannan Castle).
After the meal the three top prizes in the Seniors were presented to the winners. The matchplay vase was won by Frankie Quinn who beat John Byrne in the final. The prestigious Maritime trophy went for the first time to Jim McDonnell with Gerry McShane in second spot. The Golfer of the Year was Frankie Quinn.
