Cloverhill Golf Club - Sean gives lesson off green markers

Sean Campbell (11) gave everyone a driving lesson round the shortened green course on Sunday morning. The driving instructor was doing three point and handbreak turns in the carepark afterwards having shot a winning score of 47 points. Birdies at holes 2, 8 & 9 hads Sean three under at the turn but those shots were returned with three bogey's in a row at 12, 13 and 14 as he finished level par 69. Second place went to Gene Hughes with 42 points and is running into form at the right time with the Captains Prize in the offing.Jim Conroy held off Mark Keogh for third on a countback after they had returned 41 points.

Next Sunday is an 18 hole Major sponsored by club member Robbie Norton

INTER CLUB ACTIVITY

The Jimmy Bruen team will be in action on Friday in Mannan Castle where they will play Castlehume in the match play stages of the competition. Playing team Captain Seamus McGivern will have his Pierce Purcell team return to Downpatrick to take on Ardglass in matchplay for a place in the last 16 of the competition The Junior Cowdy team travel to Kilkeel on Sunday to take on the defending champions Kilkeel in the away leg. The return leg is on Sunday May 30.

Also in action on the last Sunday of the month is the Junior Cup team at Warrenpoint.

The Rossmore Cup team will be at home on Sunday for the second leg of their match with Spa and face an uphill struggle having lost all four matches away from home and are also 12 holes in arrears.

WEDNESDAY CUP

The second week of the Crash Repair Wednesday Cup off the back nine Green markers was a very close run affair with a quartet of players returning the leading score of 22 points. Peter Byrne, Seamus McGivern, Fr Kevin Cullen and Declan O Neill were seperated by the countback system which gave the win and a place in the Wednesday Cup final in September to Declan. This week's competition is over the front nine holes off the white markers.

MATCHPLAY

The draws for the club matchplay competitions have been made and posted on the notice boards. All matches to be played off the back white markers and current handicaps are to be used at all times. The dates for completion will be strictly enforced with the player at the top of the draw responsible for arranging the match.Any queries or complications must be addressed to the competitions convenor three days before the completion time of the match.

SENIORS

Be it stableford or stroke there is no stopping Jim McDonnell at present as he added the stroke play competition to his winning run on Thursday. Jim won with Gerry Mc Shane in second place.The draws for the Seniors matchplay in singles and pairs have been made and posted on the notice board. This week is a 3 person Rumble.

LADIES

There will be a fun 7 hole s on Tuesday evenings with all lady members encouraged to invite a friend. Next Saturday morning there is no competition as there is a four person team event in aid of the Hospice taking place.

FRIDAY OPEN

The Friday weekly open brought out the best in the Club Captain Charlie O Hare as he took first place only just from Padraig Fallon who was up one place from last week. Charlie returned 20 and 22 points for a 42 total to win with a better back nine from Padraig who was out in the worst of the weather. With the Welsh dragon spitting fire in the winners threeball it is no wonder Charlie scorched his way round to first place taking his other playing partner Fr Cullen home in third spot with 38 points. CAPTAINS DAY

The sheet for names to play in Mr Charlie O Hare's Captains Day on June 13 is posted in the clubhouse. The popularity of well known sporting personality Charlie as club captain is reflected in the number of names already on the sheet. A record number of members look set to play on the big day with the draw and tee-times being made on June 4
