Cloverhill Golf Club - No stopping Barry

When brother Ciaran taunted Barry a few weeks ago about bringing the first golf trophy into the house it must have hit home as it acted like a London bus for Barry as once his firstr win came along he cannot stop winning.

The glorious weather attracted players from far afield for the Friday weekly open and for most of the day it looked as if the winners prize was heading to Co Longford. Ashfields Eugen McCullough was the early clubhouse leader with 38 points but was joined later on by Fr Cullen who had a like score. The father and son combination of Terry and Miles Brady playing out of Co Longford showed their prowess with 17 year old 10 handicapper Miles skipping into the lead with 40 points which held on for most of the day until the in-form home player Barry McKeown made it three wins in a row with a score of 41 points to take first prize from Miles with Fr Cullen third on the countback. The next open is April 23 with an Entry fee of £10 or €12 for visitors and £5 or €6 for members. Tee times must be booked. G.U.I. CARD required. GUI Vouchers for the first three places.

Never one to be shy when it comes to form horses Fr Kevin Cullen teamed up with the man of the moment Barry for the weekend fourball despite the handicapper cutting 5 shots off his playing partner. The duo clicked to return a winning score of 47 points one better than second placed Jim McKay and Shane Grant. There will be as much rejoicing from the third pair home Ollie Reel & Shane O Neill with 44 points as if the won the competition as the beat Benny Tierney and Paul Owens with a better back nine. There is a Major competition next week kindly sponsored by McCourts Bar, Dundalk.

The Ulster Fourball team captained by Peter Byrne made the journey to Newtownstewart on Sunday for the first leg and came home with a very creditable result. The team Captain and club Captain Charlie O Hare combined to register a win as did debutants at this level Ollie Martin and Brendan Byrne to give us two out of the 5 matches. A 3-2 defeat and a 4 hole deficit is what will have to be overcome in the home leg on May 2 . On that same May day the Jimmy Bruen team will be in qualifying action at Mannan Castle

The Seniors played their first 18 holes stroke competition off the white markers and fittingly it was current club Captain Charlie O Hare who won the competition.

The committee and club members would like to extend their sympathy to members Brian & Frank Ryan on the death of their mother.
