Cloverhill Golf Club - Frosty Weather Brings Own Rewards

While the recent prolonged spell of heavy frost may have curtailed and caused in convenience to the golfers it enabled the heavy track machinery to move onto the course to undertake some new developments. A new Tee-Box at the feature ninth hole has been put in place not alone does it get rid of the mat but also adds some twenty yards in length to the hole. The eight fairway has been widened by some twenty yard with the removal of all to stone on the right hand side of the fairway at the top of the hill. A new "get out fairway" for the short hitter is being constructed at the tenth hole. With drainage and a few more new tee-boxes to be constructed it is terrific in the present climate to see the club development ,progressing in such a positive light. The new improvements to the course are enhancing it's growing reputation in golfing circles with increased membership the reward for that the hard work already put in, over the last number of years.

The fifth of seven rounds of the Winter league took place this week with the scoring for the twelve holes top notch as it has been from day one .Brendan O Rourke was a" happy chappy" heading back to Dundalk with a bulging pocket of Euros taken from his mates as his 32 points not alone skinned the boys but made him the overall winner of week 5 of the league. Brendan did not have it all his own way as he won on the countback from Seamus Keenan with Benny Tierney back in third with 31 points.

Seamus and Benny were leading scorers for their team who have taken over leadership in the team competition with 2 weeks to go. Seamus, Benny, Anthony Hillen, Seamus McCoy, Raymond Flynn and Brendan Heaney hare on552 points some 8 clear of Stephen Campbell, Stephen Markey, Brendan Byrne, Larry O Rourke, Liam Harte and James Coburn. In the race for the individual title only 8 points separates the top six contenders. Anthony Hillen (143) leads the way by a point from Vice-Captain Brian Ryan with Liam Harte (138) third and Club Captain John Byrne (136) next followed by Jim McKay & Stephen Markey who both have 135 points. There is a lot of golf to be played over the next two weeks before anything can be finalized.

The Seniors were frozen off on Thursday and will be hopeful of getting back into action this week.
