Cloverhill Golf Club - Terrific Treble For Club

For the first time in the short history of the club we have three teams through to the last 8 of inter-club competitions following a terrific week away from home for the club. The juveniles took on  a very formidable Armagh in the Ronan Rafferty at home on Tuesday and took a 14.1/2 to 5.1/2 lead for the return leg in Armagh on Friday. Minus the services of Stephen Coleman for the visit to Armagh team Captain Nial Smyth was able to draft in a very able replacement in Christopher McKay. Not content with taking the 6 points needed to progress we won the match in Armagh by two points 11-9. Led by playing team captain Miceal McGuinness showing the way forward, Daniel Hughes, Niel Smyth, Ryan McGivern and Christopher McKay added Armagh to their list of successes as they march into the quarter final of the competition.

The Junior Cowdy knocked out the holders Edenmore on Sunday on their home patch. In front 4-0 and 11 holes up from the first leg Cloverhill quickly set about booking their passage to the quarter final. First pair out Mark Hughes and Jim Conroy did the business by being dormie 2, securing the winning half point. The teams were called in but we were not behind in any of the matches which was a great result at Edenmore in the wind and the rain as they relinquished their hold on the trophy. Club Captain Peter Byrne and Declan O Neill were out second. Raymond Flynn and Gene Hughes followed in third with Tony Fenton and Conor McGivern taking up the rear.

The Sam Rutherford team went to Armagh with it all to do holding a 4 hole lead from the first leg against a home team that really fancied their chances. The swirling high winds were not accompanied by rain for the 4 pm start. With all 18 holes to be played as the result was counted on holes won, a tough days golf in a greensomes format was in prospect. There was only one hole between all of the four teams through 14 holes with Armagh in front in the first match but behind in the other three. Paul Owens and Michael McEntegart lost the last two holes to lose by three. Jim McKay and Frank Quinn brought us back into the match with a 2 hole win in match two. David Pilkington and Sean Campbell were dormie 2 and the two Colins McParland and Pilkington were 3 up with two holes remaining which meant we could not lose the match. Being able to win all three matches at varying handicap levels both home and away is a tribute to some of the quality golfers we have at the club. The juvenile progress is especially pleasing.

While those three winning teams await their quarter final opponents the club treasurer will have a hard task in the present economic climate of obtaining a loan from the bank manager to pay the bills for this unprecedented but very welcome club success.

Juvenile captain Miceal McGuinness continued his fine form by capturing the June Monthly Medal with a nett 63 in testing windy conditions. Miceal was a better back nine winner over Joe Hazzard.

The Crash Repair Wednesday Cup over the front nine off the green markers saw Stephen O Hara  produce the best golf of his career as he produced  two birdies, 5 pars and two bogies for a staggering nine holes of level par golf for an 18 handicapper. The Cup continues next Wednesday off the back nine green markers..

The Seniors Open competition on Thursday June saw another very remarkable round of golf produced by Turlough O Brien. Dundalk native Turlough was heading for home after he dinged the opening four holes but gentle persuasion by his playing partners led to an amazing turnaround in fortunes. The 24 handicapper amazingly covered the next 14 holes in only 5 over par to run away with first place and get a huge chunk off his handicap to go with his win.  A keen competitor and sportsman Tourlough along with his playing partners could not believe his dramatic and devastating change of fortune that suddenly saw his whole game click into gear. Find the recipe and bottle it Turlough and you will make a fortune. Still it is for rounds like his that we live in hope for every day we go out it just shows you that it is out there to be got.
