Cloverhill Golf Club - Fourball Better Ball
The fourball better ball weekend competition was a very keenly contested affair with a host of the early scores reaching the 43 point mark. A countback between some dozen teams looked on the cards until Paul Kelly and Kieran Grant took over the lead with 45 points. There was a sting in the tail for the leaders as they were passed by Cathal Hughes and John Quinn who returned 47 points for their first visit to the winners enclosure at Cloverhill. Next weekend is a singles stableford play Sat or Sun.
The first of many upcoming inter-club matches took place at Downpatrick on Easter Saturday where our Ulster Cup team suffered a 5-2 defeat. With only a 6 hole deficit to go with the 5-2 result confidence is high that this match can be won in the return leg on the May Bank holiday Monday. The Jimmy Bruen team is in qualifying action on Sunday next in Dungannon.
The eagerly awaited Wednesday 9 hole Newry Crash Repair Cup competition commenced this Wednesday with the front nine off the white markers coming into play.
The Seniors held the first of their Golfer of the Year competitions on Thursday in basking sunshine and all members present to get off to a good start in this the primary competition of the year. Needless to say the early leader is the very in-form Seamus McCoy who was the winner with 40 points from second placed Gerry McShane with 38. Section two winner was Brendan Brown with Noel Magill second. Next Thursday is a three man rumble.
The Friday Open Competition attracted the biggest attendance ever with the wind keeping the scoring down from previous weeks. It was Padraig Fallon (18) who emerged the winner on the countback from Gavin McErlean (17) after both carded 40 points. Sylvester Mattthews (11) from Greenore was third with 36 points..Friday Open Entry is £10 or €12 GUI Card required.
The first of the juvenile Easter competitions was well contested on Easter Saturday afternoon with Martin Hillen visiting the winners enclosure for the very first time beating last weeks winner Cormac Smyth on the countback after both had 32 points for the 12 hole competition. Gareth Kilgallon was third with 27 points. There will be another competition on Easter Tuesday with a 12-30 start. PGA Professional Joe Frawley's junior school of golf on Tuesday's @ 5pm. is proving to be a great success. Joe provided Junior members hand made booklets about rules, etiquette, a chart to monitor their progress the various stages they will go through for the five week course of lessons. Because of the numbers lessons have to be split from 5-6 pm and 6-7 pm.
