Cloverhill Golf Club - Eclectic competition

The early skift of snow on Sunday morning did not deter the golfers especially the Dundalk contingent as the battle for supremacy in the 18 hole eclectic intensifies. With  no fewer than 8 players from Dundalk in the top ten on the leaderboard at present they are very keen regardless of weather conditions to get out and try improve their score. However adopted Dundalk resident, the exiled Dub and current league leader Joe Macken is determined to hold onto his top spot. Joe improved his score by three shots this week to keep his nose in front by a couple of shots from new second placed Colm Traynor. Noel Magill and Brendan O Rourke are a shot behind Colm in joint third place. Steve O Hara,  Anthony Boden, Seamus McCoy, Jim Conroy , Ivan Whelan, Larry O Rourke, Paul McCourt, Joe Carroll, Brian Ryan, Seamus Tumilty and Raymond Flynn have all moved into significant positions with a couple of weeks left to play in this competition.

The two big movers in the eclectic competition dominated the 12 hole stableford competition that runs in conjunction. Paul McCourt thought he had bagged the prize and more importantly the 10 man sweep he was in when he returned 29 points for the 12 holes. Poor Paul was shattered on all fronts as Seamus Tumilty with three birdies had 30 points to win the competition and Paul lost both the front and back nines for good measure. Names for the Individual and team Spring League commencing on Monday 9 February are to be placed in the envelopes along with the £15 entry fee which covers the five weeks of the competition. The best 4 cards out of five will count in the individual event.

Despite the inclement weather there was the best turnout yet of members for the AGM held on Monday Jan 19. There was plenty of lively constructive discussion with no fewer than 8 new motions carried through with a further four rejected. Outgoing Captain Peter Byrne handed over the reins to Mr Neil Smyth. Neil a Mullaghbawn native is a the school principal at  the CBS in Armagh and of course is a former Armagh footballer of distinction. Another well known sporting personality Charlie O Hare was announced by Neil as his Vice-Captain.

The loss of very accomplished secretary Noel R Williams, who wants to concentrate on his duties as seniors’ coordinator where he runs a very good ship, left the only void at the top table to be filled. There were three nominations for the post with past captain Peter Byrne elected to the post. Having furnished very detailed account of the clubs finances for the year there was no way that Treasurer Raymond Martin was going to be opposed. Raymond outline the huge drain the success on the inter-club front was on the club and were it not for the fundraising efforts by members this would not be possible. Club President Seamus McCoy enters the last year of his three year term of office. The selection of the various sub committees was deferred until the first meeting of the new committee which will house a half dozen new faces this year which is most welcome.
