Cloverhill Golf Club - Winter League Action
This final week of Winter league action will decide the three sectional winners with an awful lot to play for given the closeness of the groups. The Sunday morning regular players were greeted by a real Winter chill with the icy intermittent showers adding to the cold morning. For the second week in a row Benny Tierney and Mark Hughes returned the top two scores in the 12 hole competition. Both players repeated last weeks feat of 27 & 24 respectively with Raymond Flynn next on 23 just ahead of Seamus McCoy and Fr Cullen both with 22 points.
The only issue that is not close is the overall winner for the best four cards out of 5. Even with a week to go Benny Tierney (7) with scores of 29, 22, 27 and 27 giving a total of 105 points for the 4 x12 hole rounds is some 21 points clear of the nearest to him. Benny can enjoy the week off and will still emerge as the overall Winter league winner.
With Benny out of the way in Section One it rests between Sean Campbell, Colin Pilkington, Paul Owens and Michael McEntegart to see who will win the section.
Section Two has Raymond Flynn with 84 points leading from Fr Cullen with 81 points but that is counting their four cards to date. Behind them on 70 points is Seamus McCoy and after that Mark Hughes on 68 but they both have only three cards submitted. There is an awful lot riding on this final weeks score.
Section Three is every bit as close with only one point separating the top two players. Declan O Neill is in pole position from Barry McKeown with Seamie Fearon lurking in third place 3 points further back.
Once the Winter league finishes next week end the turkey competitions will commence.
