Cloverhill Golf Club - Shane Grant is Champion of Champions
Sunday saw the 30 various singles competition winners compete in the champion of champions finale kindly sponsored by Gerry McShane of Trinity Print. The heavy rain all week may have been of great benefit to the grading, seeding, fertilizing and sanding which was carried out to the greens but it left underfoot conditions tricky .It was early starter Shane Grant (11) who caught the worm as his return of 41 points could not be bettered by any of the remaining players. Shane had 19 pts for the front nine with a no score at the second hole but was in super form over the back nine returning a one over par for a 22 point haul to give a winning 41 point total. Second place by virtue of a 22 point haul over the back nine was Anthony Hillen (15) who held off Sean Campbell (11) who finished like Anthony with 40 points.
The Front nine was won by Mark Hughes (16) with 19 points with the back nine courtesy of a birdie, birdie start for 21 points going to Christopher McKay (18). The gross was won by Jim McKay (6).
There was good scoring in the last chance competition for those who had yet to stand on the winners rostrum this year. Sean Moan (23) kept the good wine till last with a birdie at 17 helping him to a terrific 24 points back nine and an overall winning score of 42 points. Sean had 4 points to spare over Noel Magill with fellow Dundalk man James Coburn taking third place.
The 12 hole competitions for the Christmas goodies will commence. The first weeks play will take place over the first 12 holes with a turkey, ham and a bottle of spirits to be won each week. Members can play any day during the week for £3 entry with a £2 repeat. The weekly winner will be cut 2 shots with the other prize winners losing a shot
A date for the diary is Nov 23 when a the Annual General Meeting will take place. All members are asked to make a special effort to attend as there are a lot of things in the pipeline for the club and a greater input of ideas will be more than welcome.
Only 16 participants left in the fundraising last man standing competition after a weekend of premiership results that put paid to some 60 competitors in the one swoop. The 16 left in will be cagey in their selection this week which have to be submitted by midday on Friday.
