Cloverhill Golf Club - Shane Collins Wins Presidents Prize

The weather put a damper on the late starters in Charlie O Hare's Presidents Prize on Sunday but even in good conditions they would have had it all to do to reel in early starter Shane Collins (19) who posted 43 points which turned out to be a comfortable winning score with 5 39's behind the closest to him.

Shane was out in 21 points and three straight pars to start the back nine gave him a great boost as the bogey bogey finish showed that the pressure was on despite a terrific 22 point back nine haul. A hole in one at the par 3 117 yard seventh by former Captain Nial Smyth (15) bought the drinks alright but it only steered him into third place behind Andrew Brodigan (21) with Club Treasurer Raymond Martin back in fourth place the fifth person on 39 points but lost out in the prizes was James Coburn (19). Paddy Malone (12) won the Gross with Benny Tierney (11) with 23 points capturing the front nine as Brendan O Rourke (27) was a countback winner of the back nine with 22 points from Brendan Heaney, Clinton McKeever and Raymond Flynn. The weather saw the ladies defer their play for the Presidents prize so there will be a Presidential prize presentation on Sunday next at 2pm

The October Medal is on this weekend and is the last chance to join the other 7 winners in the final for the Gold Medal.. The timesheet for the Free Subs competition on Sunday Oct 9 is filling up rapidly. The draw for actual playing times will be made on Sunday next.

MARK AND HENRY WIN EPIC PAIRS FINAL
Mark Conlon and Henry McCrink won the most dramatic of pairs matchplay finals in the clubs history which finished at the fourth extra hole before they could claim victory over Brendan Byrne and Dermot Smyth. With never more than a hole in it the lead switched too and fro with both teams squandering winning opportunities during the course of the match. In the end it was a par at the trick fourth hole from Mark Conlon which brought home the bacon and a first title to Mark and Henry. The Individual semi-finals are being played this week.

The Seniors played a 3 man Rumble on Thursday which saw Fr Cullen, Brendan Brown and Noel Magill emerge as winners with 89 points. There will be a singles stableford this Thursday morning.

The Juveniles have agreed to meeting up at 1pm on Saturdays over the course of the Winter to keep their competitions going.

The Friday Open attracted good numbers but on a day of very low scoring the visitors from Killymoon, Killinbeg, Kilkeel, Dundalk and Ashfield could not prevent an all home clean sweep of the top three places for the first time in this years Friday Open competitions. Kieran McParland (19) was the winner with 41 points with Fr Kevin Cullen (17) second on 39 and Paddy O Gorman (18) third with 36 points. The Friday Open will continue until the end of October. Entry is £10 or €12 GUI Card required. Tel 028 30 889 374
