Cloverhill Golf Club - Captains Drive In
The Captains Drive-In on Sunday was without doubt the biggest and most successful since the formation of the club. Once the ceremonial drives were excellently dispatched down the first fairway despite the presence of the large crowd and cameras it was time to get the scramble underway. Some 15 minutes were allocated after the drive-in to allow the teams to disperse to the various tee-boxes for the shotgun start. While only one stroke varying from 4.7 to 5.7 separated the 29 teams that started there was a wide winning margin at the finish. Man of the moment at Cloverhill Anthony Murphy teamed up with Steve O Hara and Seamus Fearon to take his second win in the space of four days. Starting at hole 17 the began birdie, birdie and got their third birdie at hole two before a bogey at six interrupted their play but the repost was quick with back to back birdies at seven and eight. Reverting back to the back nine that they had finished off so well saw the hit birdies at holes 10, 13 and 14 with a blemish at 16 with a bogey. So 8 birdies, 8 pars and 2 bogeys gave them a 63 minus their 5.6 allowance leaving a nett 57.4. Second place was filled by Mickey Concannon, Pius Tierney and Colin Ferris with Colin Pilkington, Raymond Flynn and Ann Murphy in third place. Club Captain Nial Smyth presented the prizes immediately after the most welcome snacks provided by management.
Next weekend sees the first monthly medal take place. Members can play Saturday or Sunday in the Medal competition.. The first Sunday in April sees a fourball better ball select your own partner take place. All the inter-club draws have been made and with 10 teams in action there is an awful lot of match arranging to be done before the first round deadlines of May 31. The Ulster fourball team will be first into action as they take on Temple on April 19 & 26 with Paul Owens as team captain.
ANTHONY IS SENIORS WINNER
New member Anthony Murphy has began life at Cloverhill in a winning fashion as he captured the individual title in the 5 week 12 hole Seniors Spring League. After a poor start Anthony came into his own but had to withstand a very strong finish from John Byrne who came second just one point behind Anthony. The weekly prizes saw Jim McDonnell win the low section for the second successive week with John Byrne and Brendan Hughes sharing the high section.
