Cloverhill Golf Club - Back On the Fairway

The departed snow allowed members back out onto the fairways after a prolonged absence. There was plenty of casual golf over the holidays with the Captains Charity Scramble on Jan 2 the first competitive outing of 2011. The extra mild weather on the Sunday morning certainly helped the numbers that turned out and produced a very competitive hard fought competition. No fewer than 5 teams returned 8 under par 61 gross with the allocated handicap allowance all that divided them. Ironically it was a gross 63 off a handicap of 8.2 for a nett 54.8 that brought Oliver McDonnell, Larry Pellichio, Andrew Brodigan and Daniel Hughes up into third place just edged out on the countback by Colin McParland, Seamus McParland, Seamus McCoy and Liam Harte who finished with the same nett score off a 6.2 handicap. Given the poor weather the course especially the greens were in terrific shape for the time of year on a par with what way they have been kept all of last year.
The opening competition of the New Year went for export to Louth Village. The local village trio of Ollie Martin, Dermot Smyth and Brendan Byrne teamed up with club treasurer Raymond Martin to take the honours. A gross 61 with a 8.2 handicap gave them the winning score of 52.9

The last four weeks of the Winter League will take place for the month of January. A very tight individual and team competition is taking place judging by the opening three weeks and players can fill in their cards from Mon to Sun each week. Members including all those new ones for 2011 who are not in the league can still put in cards for the 12 hole sweep which runs in conjunction with the league.
