Cloverhill Golf Club - Another Sucessful Weekend On The Inter-Club Front

Pride of place this week goes to John Byrne's Junior Cowdy team who knocked out holders Kilkeel with a terrific performance in the home leg. Trailing 3-1 from Kilkeel last Sunday Cloverhill won all four home games to advance to a next round meeting with the winners of Omagh v Spa. Ollie Martin and Brendan Hughes won the top match 3/2 with Peter Fallon and Sean Moan repeating that result in match two. Jim Conroy and Barry McKeown had to wait until the eighteenth for victory with Conor McGivern and Gene Hughes taking up the rearguard in fine fashion winning 3/2.
The Junior Cup team failed to qualify at Warrenpoint. The Jimmy Bruen team are off to Omagh on Saturday to take on Dunfanaghy for a place in the quarter finals.

Sunday Stableford

The weekend singles stableford competition kindly sponsored by club member Robbie Norton went to the countback before a winner emerged. Anthony Boden was the longtime clubhouse leader on 43 points until Declan O Neill came in with a similar score but his 23 points on the back nine put Declan in the winners enclosure. Anthony was second with Seamie Fearon third with 41 points. The front nine went to Seamus Tumilty 24 pts. with the back nine going to Shane Collins 22 pts. Daniel Hughes picked up the gross prize.Next Sunday sees the prestigious Holmpatrick Cup fourball better ball taking place. With a place at St Andrews on the line this as usual will be a very hotly contested competition.

WEDNESDAY CUP
The first week of the Crash Repair Wednesday Cup off the back White markers proved to be another heartache for Liam Harte as he was touched off for the second week running into second place. Daniel Hughes with 22 points won through to the September final with 22 points one more than Liam. The front nine off the Green markers is for this weeks competition.

SENIORS
There were shocks galore in the Senios singles matchplay matches played during the week. Title holder Jim McDonnell found the concession of too many shots to Brian Ryan his downfall as he came up short losing out at the very last hole. Club President Noel Williams celebrated his seventy sixth birthday in style by putting out Gerry McShane. Pius Tierney is through with a win over Frank Ryan as is Fr Kevin Cullen who overcame Turlough O Brien. In the Golfer of the Year competition on Thursday Fr Cullen and Gerry McShane topped Section One with Turlough O Brien winning Section Two from Noel Magill and Oliver McDonnell.

LADIES
The fun 7 holes on Tuesday evenings is gathering momentum as the good weather helps it's cause.

FRIDAY OPEN
The Friday Open winner this week lost his place on our Junior Cowdy team as a result of his win. Having partnered his brother to victory in Kilkeel Padraig Fallon won the Friday Open and got cut two shots which ruled him out of the Cowdy. Padraig fended off the fast improving Kieran McParland with Sean McGovern back in third place.
The next open is on June 4 with an Entry fee of £10 or €12 for visitors and £5 or €6 for members. Tee times must be booked.tel-02830 889374 G.U.I. CARD required. GUI Vouchers for the first three places.

CAPTAINS DAY
Mr Charlie O Hare's Captains Day is on June 13 with. a record number of members already in the draw for tee-times on June 4. Members are asked to check with clubhouse for their tee-times. As is usual the top 12 players plus ties will go out for an additional 9 holes to see who wins the Captains Prize.

NEW COMPRESSOR AND PRATICE NET
The fundraising efforts of the members have been put to good use with the provision of a new compressor and practice net. Thanks to the efforts of Seamie Fearon the compressor for cleaning shoes and carts is iup and running and the much needed practice net will see plenty of action before Captain's Day. The three new bunkers added to the course last month will come into play this week so members can adopt before Charlie's big day.
