Cloverhill Golf Club - DLK Major

Despite the damp start to the morning members were out early for the DLK sponsored Major which counts towards Golfer of the Year. If anything judging by the scoring the rain certainly was a help with early starter Clinton McKeever (28) bagging the worm in the shape of first prize with no one able to surpass his tally of 45 points. Daniel Hughes (11) came closest with 43 one better than Colin Pilkington (5) who was one under gross for 42 points beating Graham Johnston on the countback for third spot. The front nine was won by Seamus McGivern (19) with 23 points while the back nine was won by youngster Jarlath Og Burns (19). The Gross was won by Paul Gavshon (1). It was a hot stuff with 3 of the one fourball Colin , Paul and Jarley Og all featuring in the prizes. The August medal will be played for next weekend.

It is great to see our golfers performing well in foreign fields. Benny Tierney and partner Ollie Reel put another Holmpatrick Cup pennant on the wall by becoming Armagh champions at the Nuremore last Thursday. Benny and Ollie will play in the Ulster Final at Farnham Estate in September bidding to win a place in the All-Ireland final which will be held at St Andrews. Another Reel, Christopher (17) produced the round of his life on Monday at the K Club with his 46 points after a birdie, birdie finish left him a clear winner of the Open competition from playing partner Colin Pilkington who bogeyed the last to finish one over. Not to be outdone David Pilkington made it two Open wins at the famed European Club at Brittas Bay with Fergal Lewis proving successful at Tandragee.

It was all drama on Friday night when a place in the semi-final of the Rossmore Cup rested on an eight foot putt on the eighteenth green. Cometh the hour cometh that man Anthony Hillen who calmly rolled in the final putt to give us a 3 1/2 to a 1/2 win having lost the away leg to Lurgan 3-1. The two McParlands Seamus and Colin were 5/4 winners of the first match, Niall Smyth and Paul Kelly won 1 up with Mark Conlon and Paddy Malone winning 2 up and Anthony's saving putt booking a last four berth against Edenmore.

The Crash Repair Centre, Newry Wednesday Cup off the shorter back nine Green markers once again proved heartbreak for Mark Shevlin who must have thought that his runner-up jinx (5 times) was ended when he came in with 25 points but was then undone on the countback by Seamus Keenan.

There are four more Wednesdays left to try and qualify for the 18 hole final. There will be a 7pm shotgun start to proceedings this Wednesday night in the Wednesday Cup to facilitate a study being undertaken.
