Cloverhill Golf Club - Bad Weekend on the Inter Club Front

We may have been blessed with the sunniest weekend of the year so far but as far as the inter-club scene is concerned the sun failed to shine on any of our four teams that were in action.

It started on Friday with the Pierce Purcell team in matchplay action against Tandragee at Portadown. A place in the next round looked on the way as we led 2-1 and were 6 holes to the good in the two remaining matches on the course with just 10 holes to play. But as is the way in golf it all fell asunder as we lost out on both games on the eighteenth green to lose out 3-2 but the experience generated will be of benefit as this was our first time in the knockout stages of this competition.

The Rossmore team was in action at Royal County Down where they were beaten 3-1 to tie the match at 4 each but Mourne emerged winners on holes won.

The Junior Cowdy team playing at Dungannon were unable to wrestle the win needed only netting a half match from the four games to bow out 4.5 to 3.5

The Junior Cup team were in qualifying action at Rossmore but turned in a disappointing performance to finish 5 shots outside of the last qualifying spot. The bad weekend on the fairways will keep the coffers in tact with just the Jimmy Bruen, Sam Rutherford, Mixed and Fred Daly teams left in competitive action.

The May Monthly Medal also brought about a very tight finish which needed the countback system to separate the three leading cards. Brendan Hughes (20) set the early pace with a nett 66 which was later matched by Joe Hazzard (18). New member Brendan Byrne (18) from Louth village with a 66 became a first time winner as Joe and Brendan filled the next two places on the winner’s rostrum.

The Newry Crash Repair Cup midweek 9 hole off the front nine white markers need a countback to separate the top two who returned 23 points. Jim McDonnell (11) emerged victorious from Joe Carroll (16). This week is the back nine off the white markers.

Sunday next sees the playing of the Holmpatrick Cup qualifier with the winners going on to represent the club. Cloverhill are the defending Armagh and Ulster champions in this fourball better ball competition. Given the great time last year’s winners had at St Andrews they will have it all to do to retain their Cloverhill crown on Sunday.

Sunday June 14 is the Fr Kevin Cullen sponsored GOY singles stableford competition. There are some great prizes for the leading trio, the nines and the gross winner. Timesheet is posted in the clubhouse.

The postponed St Joseph’s High School, golf classic will take place this coming Saturday June 6 with over 40 teams taking part for some fabulous prizes ranging from televisions to golf equipment in both GUI and Non GUI sections.
