Cloverhill Golf Club - Open Golf Classic
On Sunday August 12 the club is running a 4 person team classic, £80 or €120 per team including a meal. There are two tiers of prizes with GUI teams playing off the white markers and those with society handicaps playing off the green markers. The competition will run from 8am to 5pm. At the time of writing there were a few tee-times left so the bookings can be made by rings 028 30889374 or 028 30889580.
The newly refurbished website has received a great response from the members even though the site has yet to be fully finished. Fixtures and results are accessible at present with an on-line tee-time booking facility to be added. There is also a new course map to be added and when a particular hole is selected, picture as will as editorial on the selected hole will appear.
The club matchplay singles and doubles have reached the glory stages with just a couple of outstanding quarter finals to be played this week. Miceal McGuinness recored a great 3/2 victory over Ed Hughes to reach the last 8 where he will take on Colm Trainor. Joe Hazzard awaits the winner of the Paul Owens/Niall McDonnell tie. Colin Pilkington progressed to the last four at the expense of Colin Ferris 2/1 and waits to see if he will meet Nial Smyth, Joe Pilkington or Ross Colins for a place in the Final.
The Father and son combination of Brendan and Mark Hughes have reached the final of the pairs, following their win over Frank Quinn and Gene Hughes in the semi-final. Jim and Niall McDonnell will be trying to make an all father and son final, if they can overcome Dan Mallon and Paddy Clarke in the other semi.
There are only 3 Newry Crash Repair Wednesday Cup final places left to be won. The latest to qualify for the final on Wednesday August 29th was Dundalk man Jim Conroy whose 23 points for a second week in a row proved to be a winner this time round. The shotgun start 18 hole final on August 29th will have a 5-30 assembly for the 5-45 start.
Vincie Gorman became the new name on the senior’s singles matchplay trophy when he beat triple seeking Gerry McShane 3/2 in the final. This is Vince’s first win of the current season in which he is playing some good golf but just getting touched off for honours.Players were called in on Sunday morning in the Darren Clarke qualifier due to the deteriorating playing conditions. The competition will be rescheduled.
