Cloverhill Golf Club - Maire Owens Lady Captains Day
Maire Owens Lady Captains Day proved to be a wonderful occassion for all and a fitting reward for the sterling effort put into the occassion by Maire and her family. With the course in superb shape the early morning rain did little to dampen the enthuaism of the early mens starters in their quest for the Claret Jug. By the time the ladies and visitors had finished their welcoming breakfast the weather had improved dramatically for the remainder of the afternoon.
With the home ladies all out for the top prize it was former lady captain Ann Murphy who finished top dog with 40 points with Ann McGivern second and newcomer Margaret Culbert finishing third. It was another former Cloverhill captain Roisin McNulty who captured the visitors prize with a terrific return of 43 points.Ashfields Martina Reel won the longest drive with nearest the pin going to Ann Murphy. There was plenty of hot competition for the mens prize with the early bird getting the worm. Rumours that he may have found a six inch nail for the football boots are a plenty but the golf shoe replacement ones are working well for the Windmill stalwart who blew the opposition away to win first prize. Out first Kieran McParland returned a terrific 46 points to visit the winners enclosure for the first time in fine style. Like the winner another relatively new member Seamus Keenan was second on the countback from Seamie Fearon after both returned 42 points. First time on the course mens visitor Hudson McGuffin of Warrenpoint emerged the winner with a very creditable 39 points. The Seniors played on Thursday for the lady captains prize was won with 43 points by Vincie Gorman.
Eugene Sands provided the entertainment after the prize presentation buffet and a great night was had by all.
