Cloverhill Golf Club -Get The Duster Out
It looks as if is going to be a busy time for mammy McErlean getting the duster out to clear a space for more prizes and an extending scrapbook on son Gavin (16) who was a clear winner of the May Medal competition at the weekend. 38 strokes for each nine gave Gavin a nett 60 to emerge a winner by 4 shots from Sean Campbell (9) who relegated brother-in -law Nial Smyth to third place by a shot. There is a 3 person scramble on Sunday morning with a draw every half hour for playing partners. The fundraiser in aid of The Clarke Clinic is on all day Saturday from 7am to 5pm so no competition or casual golf allowed. Entries for the prestigious club singles and pairs matchplays are now being taken. To enter put your name in the Green book and put the appropriate fee (£5 or € 6 per person per event)in the envelope with your name on it and post it in the box. Entries close on Sunday May 29 no exceptions.
The inter club scene is looking pretty glum so far with The Pierce Purcell team at Banbridge following the Jimmy Bruen team in failing to qualify for the knock-out stages. The Ulster Cup team could only win 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 at home with the dropped half point making all the difference as they made their exit to Downpatrick. The Junior Cowdy team played at home to Mourne and hold a 2 1/2 to 1 1/2 lead as they head to Royal County Down next week.
The Wednesday 9 hole competition kindly sponsored by Newry Crash Repair Centre, Monaghan Street, Newry off the back nine Green markers this week brought out the best in Graham Johnston who scored a whopping 26 points for a first visit to the winners enclosure. Graham goes through to the August 18 hole final The competition continues this Wed with play off the front nine white markers.

The Friday Open Competition saw the vast majority of the afternoon players retire following some prolonged very heavy rain. They would have needed to be in top form to topple the winning score of 40 points returned by Dundalk man Andrew Brodigan who was the winner by a single point from a fast finishing Fr Kevin Cullen (16) who was round the back nine in level par for 26 points but had only 13 out to pip Ashfield's Mickey Rushe (15) by virtue of that fabulous back nine score. Friday Open Entry is £10 or €12 GUI Card required.
