Cloverhill Golf Club - First Ulster Pennant For Cloverhill
Jim McKay and David Pilkington brought the first ever Ulster pennant to the club when they won the McInerney Homes sponsored Holmpatrick Cup in aid of the National Council for the Blind of Ireland at Warrenpoint Golf Club.
The Cloverhill due were the Armagh winners for the second consecutive year and aimed to go one better than last year’s second place in the Ulster final at Enniskillen. The nine Ulster counties were represented at Warrenpoint in what was a very pleasant day for golf on Sunday. Jim (6) and David (8) had 21 points over the front nine in this fourball better ball ¾ of the handicap competition. Birdies at holes 13, 14 and 16 led to a back nine of 23 points for a winning total of 44 points.
The boys now go to St. Andrews from Oct 6-8 where the four provincial winners then compete for the Holmpatrick Cup over 36 holes with rounds on the old and new courses. Congratulations and well done to the two boys for putting the club on the map with a first Ulster title in this the tenth anniversary year of the club.
Anne Murphy’s Lady Captains Day
Anne Murphy’s Lady Captains Day on Sat Sept 6 fell victim to the wet weather on Friday with a decision taken to cancel and will be re-scheduled for a later date. Seamus McCoy’s President’s Day is on Sunday Sept 14 timesheet in operation
The 9 hole eclectic competition got off to a wet start on Wednesday night over the front nine holes and will continue over the next 3 Wednesday’s as follows Wed 10 –Back Nine, Wed 17- Front Nine, Wed 24- Back Nine.
The September Monthly Medal was played for on Sunday with a great tussle for the penultimate place in the gold medal October final. Mark Keogh (11) was the early clubhouse leader with a nett 64 and was joined on that mark by Seamus Fearon (24). Anthony Hillen (14) then took the outright lead coming in a shot better than the early leaders. The nett 63 was looking good until equalled by Miceal McGuinness who by virtue of the countback emerged as the winner of the medal
The dates for the Sam Rutherford final against Lisburn has been arranged with us travelling away on Sunday Sept 14 with the return leg on Sunday October 5
Seniors big day on Thursday
The Senior section of the club will be hosting their annual prizegiving dinner on this Thursday after the completion of all their major competitions following another most successful year. Under the stewardship of former Club Captain Noel Williams the Seniors has grown from strength to strength ever Thursday as they take to the fairways come rain or shine in a well organised programme of competitions.
Well used to running a tight ship former naval Captain Noel produces a fixtures booklet early season outlining fixture from the Spring league beginning to the Winter league ending incorporating the Maratime trophy, the matchplay and golfer of the year competitions. More importantly Noel sees that all this is done in a profit making manner which allows members enjoy this annual get together free of charge
Club going to the dogs
Cloverhill Golf Club are off to the dogs on Saturday Sept 27 for a fundraising night with 3000 Euro to be won at Dundalk Stadium. Tickets are on sale at 20 Euro each which includes admission to the track. Each individual ticket has its own personal combination on what order the 6 dogs will finish in the Cloverhill Sponsored Race. The person with the winning combination will receive 2000 Euro with the losing tickets entered in a draw for 5x200 Euro.
Any member wishing to avail of the restaurant on the night of the fundraiser can book a place 40Euro per person with club treasurer Raymond Martin.
All members are asked to return their tickets sold or unsold immediately.
