Cloverhill Golf Club - Paddy shoots maedal 60

The first new arrival to the Malone household has certainly added a new ingredient to the golf game of Paddy. Out on Wednesday night in the 9 hole Wed Cup Paddy had 25 points for the front nine off the green markers. Off the white markers on Sunday in the Medal stroke play competition a 2 over par front nine was followed by a 4 over back nine from the 15 handicapper for a gross 75 which yielded him a nett 60. The great condition of the course certainly brought out the best of Paddy but he was not on his own as Ollie Reel (17) was second with a nett 61 edging out Liam Moan (18) who also had a nett 61. Liam could not let brother Sean get away with getting cut last week so he had to do likewise this week. A one under par 68 from 6 handicapper Colin Pilkington relegated him to fourth place in the medal Indeed the handicappers blade will need sharpening after this week with no fewer than 10 getting the chop. Next weeks competition is a singles stableford off the Green markers.

PIERCE PURCELL QUALIFICATION

Playing team Captain Seamus McGivern led his Pierce Purcell team to qualification for the knock-out stages after they came through the qualifier played at Downpatrick.. Cloverhill represented by Anthony Hillen, Mark Hughes, Colm Trainor, Paddy Malone, Seamus McParland, Mark Conlon, Seamus McCoy, Seamus McGivern and the lowest scoring pair of all the qualifiers Raymond Flynn and Graham McNally came in second behind Kilkeel with Ardglass third and Warrenpoint fourth. Cloverhill will have to return to Downpatrick to take on Ardglass before the end of the month in matchplay.This latest back to back Purcell qualification on top of last weeks Bruen (3 years in a row) is a great boost to a small club like ours.

WEDNESDAY CUP

The opening week of the Crash Repair Wednesday Cup saw some great scoring over the front nine holes off the Green markers. It was new dad Paddy Malone who was doing the celebrating with a winning return of 25 points may as well get it in before the sleepless nights was Paddy's thoughts as he condemned Gene Hughes to second spot after he accumulated 23 points. This Wed is off the back nine Green markers.

SENIORS

The first round of the prestigious Maratime Trophy for the Seniors took place on Thursday last. The early pacesetter is the seniors man in form Jim McDonnell who shot 40 points to beat Fr Cullen into second place by a point Oliver McDonnell was the winner of section two from vice-captain John Byrne. Next Thursday is a stroke play competition.

LADIES

The Annual Anne Sproule Memorial competition took the biggest turnout of ladies thus far this year to the fairways. It was Ann McGiovern who emerged the winner of this prestigious competition in the ladies calander. Anne Murphy was second with Lady Captain Maire Owens getting on the winners roster in third spot. The ladies will be heading with the men on Sunday to Cavan to play the qualifying round in the All-Ireland mixed competition. There will be a fun 7 hole s on Tuesday evenings with all lady members encouraged to invite a friend.

FRIDAY OPEN

The Friday weekly open was blighted blessed with great weather and a large attendance from far and wide. The use of the word blessed could have been a sign as after a long absence from the winners enclosure once prolific winner Fr Kevin Cullen returned as number one with his tally of 38 points winning first prize. There were 6 players including one from as far away as Edmonton, Canada one point behind the winner but the countback deemed Christopher McKay was second with and Padraig Fallon back in third place.The next open is May 14 with an Entry fee of £10 or €12 for visitors and £5 or €6 for members.
