Cloverhill Golf Club - Great Success
The Open 4 person club classic held over two days Saturday and Sunday was a great success with teams from far and wide participating in the two tier competition for GUI and non-GUI golfers. With the course in terrific shape the by now ever present rain on Sunday did not dampen the enthusiasm as the battle for the coveted Cuchulainn Crystal sponsored prizes heated up.
There was success in the non-GUI section for a Dundalk quartet led by team captain Noel Magill who drove his side to victory in a non taxing manner. Noel ‘s passengers on this winning voyage was fellow club member Paul McCourt as they teamed up with Larry O Rourke and Paddy Malone for a return of 100 points with their 53 on the back nine separating them from the team in second place. The runners up were members Clinton McKeever and Colm Quinn who brought along Paul O Connor and Conor Toal only to be beaten by a better back nine for top honours.
The GUI section was a runaway win for 4 club members who also visited the winner’s enclosure with 100 points. Lady Captain Ann McGivern was joined by husband Seamus and son Conor along with former captain Fionnuala Conlon as they lay their claim on first prize with an opening nine holes that yielded 53 points. In second place by virtue of a better back nine was Dundalk member’s father & son Kevin and Stephen Keenan who joined members Seamus Fearon and Raymond Martin to produce 93 points. It was the 52 points over the back nine that saw them hold off the challenge of Mark, Brendan, Gene Hughes and Frank Quinn after they both finished with the same number of points. A big thank you to our main competition sponsor Cuchulainn Crystal and all the golfers who participated in this annual fundraising event.
Newry Crash Repair sponsored Wednesday Cup Final on Wednesday August 29 was a very keenly contested affair that went right down to the wire before the winner was established. Raymond Martin (20) was the winner of the 18 strong final by virtue of a better back nine from Charlie O Hare (23) after both had finished with 39 points. The club are indebted to Michael Concannon for his continued sponsorship of this midweek competition.
Popular club President and former captain Seamus McCoy will be hosting his prize day on Sunday next Sept 9. Tee-times will be available from Wednesday night following the draw which will take place following the Wednesday Sweep competition.
The club singles matchplay is down to the last four where Colin Pilkington meets Ross Collins and Paul Owens takes on Miceal McGuinness. The all father and son pairs final between Brendan & Mark Hughes against Jim & Niall McDonnell is also due to take place this week.
