Jim Strikes Gold
The sextet of Medal winners Michael McGuinness, Jim McKay, Frank Quinn, Raymond Martin, Mark Hughes and Joe Hazzard played in the final for the gold medal. A week after claiming the Golfer of the Year title the very consistent 6 handicapper Jim McKay became the winner of the Gold Medal. A nett level par 69 was good enough to take the title but only just on a countback from Mark Hughes also returned a nett 69 but the 10 footer for par on 18 by Jim was the most important putt of the day. Jim who has been a model of consistency all year has produced some great golf as has runner-up Mark who has shown terrific improvement in this his second year of golf.
For those not involved in the Medal Final there was a 3 person rumble and it turned out to be another close run thing before there was a winner. There was very little separating the 20 teams in this novel competition in which one score counted over the first 6 holes, 2 scores counted over the middle 6 holes with all three scores to count over the last 6 holes. The winners were the Dundalk trio of Larry O Rourke, Noel Magill and Joe Carroll who returned 85 points one better than second placed Clinton McKeever, Mickey White and Conor Toal. Mark Keogh, Neil Smyth and Sean Campbell finished in third place.
