Vice Captain Colin takes the Sweep
It was the turn of Vice-Captain Colin McParland to claim the last of the Sunday 12 hole sweep competitions with his 32 points a winner by one from Seamus McCoy. James Coburn and Peter Smyth were next with 30 points. The 12 eclectic competition commences this week and will continue until the Captains Drive-In on March 11. There will be prize vouchers for the first 3 each week as well as for the top three overall. Read more
Helena McInerney will be the Lady Captain for 2012 following a meeting of the progressive ladies committee. It has taken several years of persuasion to get long serving member Helena to eventually don the Green jacket. Everyone knows what a great ambassador she will be for the club. It was a case of getting her always forthcoming background help to the forefront by befitting her with an office, her previous work on behalf of the club has merited. Read more
Brian Ryan Becomes Leading Light
Dundalk resident Brian Ryan has been entrusted with the job of leading Cloverhill through an ambitious year of change as he took over Captaincy of the club for 2012, at the recently held well attended Annual General Meeting. For members to get 2012 off to a flying start it is imperative that they attend the AGM which will take place on Sunday Jan 8 in the clubhouse at 2pm sharp. There are a lot of items on the agenda that need good debate not least the idea of changes to the course which will make it a par 70 instead of 69. The 12 hole Eclectic/ Turkey competition produced another duel winner with James Coburn (8) following up last weeks success by winning the penultimate weeks play with the lowest winning total of the 6 weeks played 26 points. Second place went to Raymond Flynn with 25 pts one better than club President Charlie O Hare. Read more
The fifth week of the 12 Eclectic/ Turkey competition produced a new winner with James Coburn (8) improving on his third week third place by winning with 30 pts which proved 2 better than regular podium finisher David Pilkington (3) who now has two firsts and two seconds to his name in the five weeks played. The fourth week of Eclectic/ Turkey competition saw a lot of midweek activity from a few players who have moved up significantly in the overall stroke competition. The third round of the Eclectic/turkey competition saw David Pilkington (3) come out the right side of a countback for his second successive success in the competition. It not has taken David long to master his early christmas present of new clubs which seem to be doing the business as David returned 29 points for the 12 holes Read more
The second round of the Eclectic/turkey competition saw a three way tie on 27 points to fill the top three places. David Pilkington (3) went one better than last weeks second place with Sean Conroy filling the runner-up spot ahead of third placed Raymond Martin. Week three of the 7 week competition will be in operation this week. Read more
The first Sunday frost quickly disappeared to allow the opening weeks play in the 12 hole- 7 week Eclectic-Christmas voucher competition. There will be weekly prizes for the top three cards and in the overall eclectic competition prizes for those who finish one, two, three. Read more
The last 18 hole competition over the full course was for the club competition prizewinners throughout the year and certainly brought in some good scores given the heavy underfoot conditions. Colin McParland (12) was the overall winner with 43 points which was one better than nearest rival Liam Harte (20). Young Gareth Kilgallon (18) won the four way countback for third with 40 points. Cathal Hughes (26) won the Back Nine with 22 points with the same points tally doing the business for Brendan Heaney (26) on the Front Nine. Shane Grant (12) won the Gross prize. Read more
Shane Grant is Matchplay Champion
Shane Grant (12) is the club singles matchplay champion for 2011. Shane birdied hole 17 for a 2/1 win over Anthony Hillen (12). Shane did the damage over the opening 9 holes by recording 9 straight pars for a 3 hole lead but despite clawing 2 back it was second year in a row heartbreak for Anthony in the matchplay. Read more
One of the biggest competitions of the year the Free Subs took members out in force for the bonus of free membership for 2012 kindly put up by Colin.. The lure of the prize saw lots out of the traps with good scores over the opening nine holes only to fade later on. Read more
The October Medal was contested in very heavy underfoot conditions but it did not stop some very good scoring with all members trying to grab the last spot to join the other 7 winners in the final for the Gold Medal on Sunday Oct 16. Read more
At the September meeting The Committee sanctioned a further allocation of club funds to Colin to carry out further improvements to the course.
As in the past members have seen the benefits of their much appreciated support of The Committees fund-raising efforts transferred into progress on the golf course in terms of condition and machinery. Read more
Shane Collins Wins Presidents Prize
The weather put a damper on the late starters in Charlie O Hare's Presidents Prize on Sunday but even in good conditions they would have had it all to do to reel in early starter Shane Collins (19) who posted 43 points which turned out to be a comfortable winning score with 5 39's behind the closest to him. Mark Conlon (15) was the winner of the September Medal to qualify for next months gold medal final. A nett 66 return from Mark gave him a one shot victory over Shane O Neill (11) and third placed Seamus McCoy (15) who both had nett 67. The October Medal on the first weekend of October is the last chance to join the other 7 winners Christopher Reel (March), Paul Kelly (April), Gavin McErlean (May), Christopher Lynch (June), Paddy Malone (July), Seamus McParland (August) and September winner Mark Conlon. Mark Shevlin Wins Wednesday Cup
The Crash Repair Centre, Newry Wednesday Cup 18 hole final saw the old adage " the last shall be first " come true for Mark Shevlin as he captured the trophy in rain drenched conditions with a winning return of 40 points. Mark had been runner-up no fewer than 5 times but finally made the breakthrough on the final qualifying night to book his place in the final. A first visit to the winners enclosure for Mark as he claimed the Annual Michael Concannon sponsored competition. Read more
Lady Captain Ann McGivern was blessed with super weather for her Captains Day on Friday Sept 2 which attracted a playing field of 24 made up of visitors and members. Competition for the beautiful array of prizes on offer was intense with only 0ne point separating four ladies from winning the top prize. There was great rejoicing amongst the small band of lady members when it was announced that the 36 points from Margaret Culbert saw her win for the very first time in club competition. Read more
The Annual fundraising club classic was a tremendous success thanks to the strong support from our sponsors DLK Quality Fuels, Armagh Logistics and Enchanted Spa and Retreat. Fractions decreed by a tenth of the combined handicaps saw the top sextet separated by less than a shot. An eleven birdie haul with a handicap allowance of 5 for a nett 53 gave the Greenore quartet of Ciaran Keenan (4), Patsy Winters (10), Alan Winters (15) and Malachy Duffy (21) the top prize of 4x100 fuel vouchers. 77-year old Noel Williams with calm assurance slotted home a 6 footer for par on the last green to give him and partner Raymond Kelly victory in the Seniors Matchplay final. Noel and Raymond were one down to Fr Kevin Cullen and Turlough O Brien playing 17 and the only time the winners were ahead in the match was when Noel bagged that par on the 526 yard eighteenth hole. August Medal Provides Low Scores
The second installment of the Golf Psychology practical session worked wonders for those going out to play in the August Medal which produced some great scoring with a multitude of the field coming in with a par round or below. Nett 66'S from Paul Owens (10) and Fr Cullen (16) were passed by a quartet of nett 64's from Stephen O Hara (11), Seamus McGivern (19), Patrick Devine (20) and Raymond Flynn (16). Read more
Despite the damp start to the morning members were out early for the DLK sponsored Major which counts towards Golfer of the Year. If anything judging by the scoring the rain certainly was a help with early starter Clinton McKeever (28) bagging the worm in the shape of first prize with no one able to surpass his tally of 45 points. Daniel Hughes (11) came closest with 43 one better than Colin Pilkington (5) who was one under gross for 42 points beating Graham Johnston on the countback for third spot. Read more
The July Medal was won in style by Paddy Malone (13) who was 5 over for his round finishing with a nett 61 to be four shots clear in a Dundalk one two from Noel Magill with Seamus McParland back in third place. Read more
The Crash Repair Centre, Newry Wednesday Cup is attracting the numbers as members vie for a place in the 18 hole final at the end of August. On July 6 off the front nine white markers Paddy Malone (13) with 22 points pipped Martin McKeown (24) into second place on 21. The following week off the back nine white markers it took a terrific 24 points from Seamus Tumilty (13) to beat Andrew Brodigan (21) by a point with Andrew one better than Mark Shevlin (24). The growing stature of the club was reflected in a record number of members teeing off for the biggest prize of the year Mr John Byrne Captains Prize. The turnout for the Dublin native reflects his popularity with the members and is testimony to all his efforts as club captain. Read more
Next weekend is the biggest of the year as John Byrne hosts his Captains Day on Sunday. As is now traditional the Captain will entertain his guests with golf and a meal on Saturday afternoon. The ladies will be first in action at noon on Saturday as they play for the Captains Prize. Sunday sees the action begin at 7am with a record number of entrants playing to qualify for the 9 playoff holes which will commence at approximately 5-30. The top 12 qualifiers plus ties will play the extra 9 holes for the main prize. Last year it took 39 points to make the playoff holes. Read more
Club secretary Seamus McGivern led his Rossmore team to a 4 nil home win over Portadown. They now progress to the 1/4 final against Lurgan.
The Ulster 4 ball team narrowly lost out by 2 holes to Redcastle when the match was tied at 5-5 Read more
The Holmpatrick cup was played on Sunday the 12th June with the early players getting the best of the weather. The benchmark was set with two scores coming in with 43 points only to be out done by the teams of James Coburn + Paddy Malone and Daniel Hughes + Christopher McKay scoring 44 points. However the pairing of Declan O'Neill (19) and Raymond Flynn (16) shiny through with a great score of 45 points off three quarters of their handicap. Read more
Much to the delight of members the 3 new tee boxes at holes 9, 11 and 18 come into play this week. The mat at the feature ninth hole has been replaced with a very enlarged grass tee box which really sets off this testing Par 3. There is a new back white tee box for hole 111 which makes it all the more daunting for your drive. The new tee box on the final hole means that the internal out of bounds to the left of this fine finishing Par 5 will no longer be in place.Read more
The Sunday morning 3 person scramble brought in first time winners to the enclosure after a couple of them have had a few near misses previously. 3 provinces were spanned as Down man Anthony Boden, Louth man, Brendan Byrne and Waterford native Ivan Whelan combined to shoot a winning nett score of 59.5. It looks as if is going to be a busy time for mammy McErlean getting the duster out to clear a space for more prizes and an extending scrapbook on son Gavin (16) who was a clear winner of the May Medal competition at the weekend. 38 strokes for each nine gave Gavin a nett 60 to emerge a winner by 4 shots from Sean Campbell (9) who relegated brother-in -law Nial Smyth to third place by a shot. It must have been that the players were suffering from too much sun as the scores came hot and fast in the Mayday Stableford competition. The first card returned set the early high standard with Eugene Byrne (6) in with 40 points and was joined on that mark by Seamus McGivern (19) and James Coburn (19). The fourball better ball weekend competition was a very keenly contested affair with a host of the early scores reaching the 43 point mark. A countback between some dozen teams looked on the cards until Paul Kelly and Kieran Grant took over the lead with 45 points. Paul a new member went round in a 7 over 76 for a winning nett return of 62 which was three shots clear of Seamus Tumilty (15) and Christopher McKay (12) who both finished with nett 65's. Barry McKeown (18) even in the company of the priest showed no pre wedding nerves as was the overall winner of the 3 category singles stableford competition held over the weekend. Barry returned a winning total of 45 points and is down to 16 with club members slagging him, that he may get the golf in now, as once the ring goes on ,his fairway time will be well curtailed. Mammy McErlean will be delighted that her son gave the print editions a quick chance to get his name right within a week of getting it wrong, as he followed up last weeks promising showing by winning the Byrne Monumental sponsored singles stableford competition on Sunday. Gavin (18) edged out Colin McParland (12) on the countback after both returned 42 points. Joe Hazzard (20) was third ahead of Colin Pilkington (6) and Cathal Hughes (28) with all three on the 41 point mark. Read more
The opening Golfer of the year competition the March Medal brought record entries and produced some great scoring. The mixture of old and new members is certainly going to make it very hard to get on the winners pedestal this year if the standard set in this competition is anything to go by. Captains John & Ann Drive - In
Captain John Byrne and Lady Captain Ann McGivern attracted a record attendance for the traditional start to the golfing season at Cloverhill with the Annual drive-in followed by a four person scramble. John and Ann duly split the first fairway with their drives watched by the members who then dispersed to double load all but two of the tee-boxes for the shotgun start scramble. Read more
In his year of Captaincy John Byrne has not taken long to get into the winners enclosure by capturing the weekend 12 hole singles stableford competition. The good weather over the weekend brought out the biggest entry to date this year and it took a countback to separate the top three players all of whom finished with 32 points. Read more
The final round of the Winter League was postponed on Sunday morning because of the heavy overnight rain. The scores that were returned on Saturday will not count with the postponed round taking place next weekend. Big Turn Out For Winter League
There was a huge turnout over the weekend for the penultimate round of the Winter League. The mild weather and a bit of curiosity to get a glimpse at all the development work certainly left it a very busy Sunday with scoring to match the conditions. It was Colin Pilkington (4) with a 6 birdie burst over the twelve holes who was this weeks winner with 32 points giving him one to spare over a trio who finished in the following order Stephen Markey (9) second, Liam Harte (13) third and Benny Tierney (7) fourth. Frosty Weather Brings Own Rewards
While the recent prolonged spell of heavy frost may have curtailed and caused in convenience to the golfers it enabled the heavy track machinery to move onto the course to undertake some new developments. A new Tee-Box at the feature ninth hole has been put in place not alone does it get rid of the mat but also adds some twenty yards in length to the hole. The eight fairway has been widened by some twenty yard with the removal of all to stone on the right hand side of the fairway at the top of the hill. A new "get out fairway" for the short hitter is being constructed at the tenth hole. Read more
The return to Winter League action certainly brought out the members on Sunday morning for week four of the 12 hole competition. Scoring was superb with 333 points from Anthony Hillen (9) taking top spot by a point from a trio of players. The Countback saw the following order prevail Second Brendan Heaney (17), third Raymond Martin (14) and fourth Raymond Flynn (10). The mixture of old and new members in this 12 hole competition is working well and the next two Sundays will see weeks 5&6 completed.Read more

The departed snow allowed members back out onto the fairways after a prolonged absence. There was plenty of casual golf over the holidays with the Captains Charity Scramble on Jan 2 the first competitive outing of 2011. The extra mild weather on the Sunday morning certainly helped the numbers that turned out and produced a very competitive hard fought competition. No fewer than 5 teams returned 8 under par 61 gross with the allocated handicap allowance all that divided them.Read more
The seasonal weather is playing havoc for those wanting to golf but we will have to wait until the fairways are clear to get back into the swing of things. With Christmas round the corner there was plenty of activity in the club with people calling to get membership vouchers as Xmas presents.Read more
Members were glad to get back out on the course on Sunday morning after a prolonged absence due to the snow. Although play was delayed until after 11 because of the frost there was a good gathering for the sweep which was held between the participants and a well fought out 12 hole competition followed with some good scoring.Read more
The weather failed to stop a record attendance at the club's AGM which was held for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. Outgoing Captain Charlie O Hare was lavish in his praise for the assistance and support he had received from the committee and members for what has been a memorable year in office. The outgoing Captain was delighted with the continuing progress the club made under his direction.Read more

John posted a very good card for week four of the Winter league before the weather turned which resulted in no play on Saturday or Sunday leaving week four of the competition abandoned. After three rounds of the 12 hole Winter league only 5 points seperate the top seven players. Brian Ryan with 85 points is top of the pile with a one point lead over Anthony Hillen. The second week of the christmas fare combined with the individual and team Winter league certainly produced the scores for the 12 hole competetion. Matchplay champion Paddy Malone (12) was in sparkling form shooting one under par for a total of 33 points. Ollie Martin beat Liam Harte on the countback for second after both returned 31 points ahead of the chasing quartet of Brendan Tierney, Anthony Hillen, Shane Grant and Daniel Hughes who all had 30 points. Former club Captain Peter Byrne (18) was the winner of the Gold medal with a nett 69 giving him the honours in the 8 man final on Sunday morning. After a 12 over opening 9 Peter came home 6 over for an 87 total to beat Conor McGivern (17) who was consistant with 43 over each nine. . Read more
STEVE IS CRASH REPAIR CHAMPION
Clareman Steve O Hara (11) can put the NEWRY CRASH REPAIR CENTRE (30266511) WED CUP sponsored by proprietor Michael Concannon along with his 1995 All-Ireland hurling meadal following his victory in Sunday's 18 hole final.The 18 weekly winners of the Wed 9 hole competition teed off from 8-30 in the final A double bogey start did not deter Steve as he followed it with a birdie and finished the opening 9 with 22 points. Steve repeated the 22 point haul over the second nine for a winning score of 44. Runner-up was Christopher Reel (18) who shot 42 points with Daniel Hughes (10) third on 37. Read more
The single stableford Major competition this weekend was kindly sponsored by SK Windows, Forkhill Rd, Cloughoge, Newry Tel; 30266238 and produced some great scoring in perfect playing conditions. The early pace was set by the opening three ball with Shane Muckian (25) holding off the in-form Graham Johnston (27) by a point 41 to 40.Christopher McKay (12) and Shane Collins (19) and Seamie Fearon (20) all matched the leading 41 points. Louth villager Brendan Byrne (19) took over as leader with 43 points which held sway all day until the last group on the course produced the winner in Sean Conroy (20) who was only 3 over for his back nine holes for 25 points to go with 19 in the front to pip Brendan by a point.Read more
The penultimate Monthly Medal saw Raymond Flynn visit the winners enclosure for the second successive week as he won through to the Gold Medal final in October. The tyning and sanding of the greens earlier in the week did not deter the scoring with 14 players within two shots of winner Raymond. A triple bogey at the third hole did not deter Raymond who was 7 over at the turn but 5 pars, a birdie and 3 bogey's over the back nine left the 16 handicapper 9 over for his round and a nett 62.Read more
RAYMOND CAPTURES PRESIDENTS PRIZE
The Presidents Prize on Sunday was blessed without any rain but with placing in use the scores came in hot and thick for the third biggest prize in the yearly golf calender. Early starter the in-form Barry McKeown who began the year off 26 and is now down to 19 was magnificient over the front nine holes where he was only 2 over par for 26 points. The back nine of 19 left him in a very strong position with 45 points.Robbie Norton (16) came in with 44 which was later equalled by Shane O Neill (13). The poor weather on Sunday did not deter the regulars as they teed up for the singles stableford 3 category competition. The Low Section was won by David Pilkington (6) with 39 points with the middle section going to Shane O Neill (13) with 41 points and Gene Hughes (22) capturing the high section with 39 points. Next Sunday sees a packed timesheet for the Presidents Prize with the September Medal the following week. Read more
The heavy showers or the football failed to detract the numbers for the annual Fr Kevin Cullen singles stableford competition. Using our neighbours ,the fabulous luxurious Enchanted Spa and Retreat to provide the vouchers for the competition went down really well with the members who might use the vouchers themselves rather than give it to their better half. Maire Owens Lady Captains Day proved to be a wonderful occassion for all and a fitting reward for the sterling effort put into the occassion by Maire and her family. With the course in superb shape the early morning rain did little to dampen the enthuaism of the early mens starters in their quest for the Claret Jug. By the time the ladies and visitors had finished their welcoming breakfast the weather had improved dramatically for the remainder of the afternoon.Read more
Saturday next August 7 is another big day at the club when Lady Captain Maire Owens hosts her big day.On Thursday the Seniors will play for the Lady Captains prize. The Gents will play on Saturday between 8-11 am and 2- 4pm. The ladies and invited guests will play between 11am and 2pm. There will be a buffet supper for committee, guests and prizewinners at 7-30 with prize presentation at 9-30 with music by Eugene Sands and everyone is welcome.Read more
The good run of the inter-club teams came to a shuddering halt at the quarter final stages with the Junior Cowdy and Rossmore Caup teams unable to turn over the damage done away from home in the second legs at Cloverhill. First up on Sunday were the Roossmore Cup team against Ardglass and this match could not have been much closer with the outcome depending on the fourth and final match which was all square on the eighteenth tee. Graham McNally and Raymond Flynn wiped out the holes deficit in the 3-1 away defeat with a whopping "dog licence" success in the opening match. Read more
The July Monthly Medal brought a new man to rthe winners enclosure after a number of near misses. With two club teams in action and the weather not great the turnout was not as big as usual and Brendan O Rourke from Dundalk took ful advantage with his nett 67 good enough to qualify him for the October Gold Medal final. This weekend is the Clanrye Taxis sponsored major.The club fundraising four person team golf classic will be held on Sat July 31 & Sun Aug 1 with £1000 in prizes. Read more
Hole in one helps Peter to medal
Former club captain Peter Byrne returned the round of his career in the June Monthly Medal which included a hole in one.It was at the longest par 3 on the course the 190 yard sixteenth hole wher Peter picked up his ace on the way to a nett 58 to easily qualify for the Gold medal final in September.The Fallon brothers Peter & Padraig were joined on nett 63's by Graham McNally. Next Sunday is the Darren Clarke singles stableford qualifier. Play is only on Sunday. Read more
The damp start to Sunday did little to the enthusiasm of members who turned out in record numbers for Charlie O Hare's Captains Day. The first objective of all participants was to qualify for the third nine hole playoff. Last year 38 points was the cut off point this year it was one higher with 39 points making the cut. In all there were 19 qualifiers who were just separated. Read more
The latest update on a tremendous Captains Day for Charlie O Hare is that 19 players seperated by just 4 points were in the third nine playoff to see who would win the biggest prize of the year. The big event of the year takes place next Sunday with Mr Charlie O Hare hosting his Captains Day. Another Sucessful Weekend On The Inter-Club Front
Pride of place this week goes to John Byrne's Junior Cowdy team who knocked out holders Kilkeel with a terrific performance in the home leg. Trailing 3-1 from Kilkeel last Sunday Cloverhill won all four home games to advance to a next round meeting with the winners of Omagh v Spa. Ollie Martin and Brendan Hughes won the top match 3/2 with Peter Fallon and Sean Moan repeating that result in match two. Jim Conroy and Barry McKeown had to wait until the eighteenth for victory with Conor McGivern and Gene Hughes taking up the rearguard in fine fashion winning 3/2.Read more
The three person rumble on Sunday produced a close finish with only one point seperating the top two teams . It was Clinton McKeever, Paul McCoy and Liam Moan the first on the tee at eight who produced the winning score of 83 points to win by one frpm Colin Ferris, James Coburn and Frank Ryan. Read more
Sean gives lesson off green markers
Sean Campbell (11) gave everyone a driving lesson round the shortened green course on Sunday morning. The driving instructor was doing three point and handbreak turns in the carepark afterwards having shot a winning score of 47 points. Birdies at holes 2, 8 & 9 hads Sean three under at the turn but those shots were returned with three bogey's in a row at 12, 13 and 14 as he finished level par 69.Read more
The first new arrival to the Malone household has certainly added a new ingredient to the golf game of Paddy. Out on Wednesday night in the 9 hole Wed Cup Paddy had 25 points for the front nine off the green markers. Off the white markers on Sunday in the Medal stroke play competition a 2 over par front nine was followed by a 4 over back nine from the 15 handicapper for a gross 75 which yielded him a nett 60.Read more
Christopher is the overall winner
The future of the club is in good hand with the crop of young players around the club beginning to show their true potential. The bank holiday weekend singles stableford featuring three handicap ranges certanly brought out the best in some of the players. It was 16 year old Christopher McKay (15) who was the overall winner with 46 points evenly split between the two nines. A two shot loss should not do this talented young golfer a button of harm as he is well capable of even better.Read more
Conlon makes his mark in McCourt major
It did not take new member Mark Conlon long to adjust to his new surroundings as he captured the big April competition which was kindly sponsored by McCourt's Bar, 1 Francis Street Dundalk. Steve wins March medal
All-Ireland hurling medal winner with Clare Steve O Hara (14) has shown that he has lost none of his prowess with the small ball by capturing the first monthly medal of the season. A triple bogey at the par 5 third did not deter Steve who finished the front nine 6 over par. Birdies at eleven and sixteen were cancelled out by a double bogey on fifteen to give a level par back nine for a 75 gross and a winning nett score of 61.Read more
Charlie and Maire start season off
Club Captains Charlie O Hare and Maire Owens hosted the drive-in to officially mark the start of the golfing season for club members. If their year in office goes as smmoth and straight as their respective ceremonial drives in front of the biggest crowd since the clubs inception then they both can be guarenteed a comfortable year at the helm.The traditional shotgun start was adorned with ideal weather as the teams went to occupy the tee-boxes for the three person scramble.Read more
Captains Drive-In
The Captains Drive-in will be held next Sunday March 14. As is the norm the ceremonial drive -in by the respective Captains Charlie O Hare & Moira Owens will take place at 9 am and will be followed by a shotgun start scramble with complimentary snacks and refreshments before the prize presentation immediately after play is ended. There is already a big entry on the timesheet so you better get your name down if you forgot as teams will be drawn on Friday.Read more
Ollie and Joe steal the show
Once the frost lifted Sunday turned into a lovely Spring Day and the sunshine brought out the players for the third round of the league. The 12 hole competition saw four players produce 30 points or more to help their own individual and team score. Ollir Reel and Joe McCann finished with 32 points one more than Benny Tierney who in turn was one ahead of Jim Conroy. Read more
Snowy Sunday
The snow on Sunday morning certainly put a damper on week three action in the Spring league with no play taking place on a day when the bulk of the participants furnish their cards. Jim McDonnell Steals the Show
The first week of the team event in the 12 hole Spring League saw only 4 points seperating the 10 competing teams. With the best four cards out of 6 counting towards the team score there were three teams tied for the lead on 104 points." Scots Clan "skippered by Mark Keogh, team captain Jim McDonnell has his "Too many shots " team in the mix as is the "Seamie Macs" led by Seamus McParland with all three sharing top spot. Raymond Springs Into The Lead
The pleasant mild Sunday morning fairly added the numbers to the start of the individual and team 12 hole Spring League.The league runs for 5 weeks with the best 3 out of 5 cards counting towards the individual title. There will be 10 teams of 6 in the team event with the best 4 cards of 6 counting in the team event.The team event runs for the full 5 weeks. In the event of a tie at the end of the 5 weeks the the combined scorees from the two discarded scores each week will determine the winners. Read more
Hole In One For Benny
The last of the sweep competitions saw play delayed until 11-30 due to the frost but it still attracted a good crowd of players especially given the rich pickings that were won last week. It was especially good news for those in attendance as the drinks were on Armagh All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Benny Tierney following his hole in one at the 140 yard par 3 fourth hole. Changes at the Top
One of the best attended Annual General Meeting is a very good sign for the club. Outgoing club secretary Perter Byrne gave a detailed account of the years activities and hoped that the progress of the club would be taken a few steps further in the coming year. Treasurer Raymond Martin outlined the healthy state of the finances leaving the club in a position to undertake several enhancement projects during the closed season as such. Sean Moan Takes the Turkey
It was a pleasant Sunday morning that greeted the golfers for the third week of the Christmas 12 hole competition following a week of more rain. The way the results have been going for the three weeks Paddy Malone and Mark Keogh will be able to set up a stall selling their goods as they both feature in the prizes for the third week in succession .Despite being cut for their previous two placings the rich vein of form that both Paddy and Mark continues as they filled the minor placings behind Sean Moan. 4 Birdies Gets Mark A Turkey
The soggy underfoot conditions did not deter the golfers from participation in the twelve hole Turkey competition. There is going to be plenty of Christmas cheer in two houses this year as second and third last week both finished with 29 points this week despite being docked a shot for last weeks exploits. Mark Keogh (8) with four birdies at holes 6, 7, 11 and 12 came out on top in a countback from Paddy Malone (14) who finished strong with birdies at holes 10 and 12. Read more
Washed Out Weekend
There was no competition on Sunday morning as the course was closed following the overnight rain. There was some great golf for the club members who went on the weekend away to the fabulous Greg Norman course at Doonbeg in Clare. Saturday was like a summers day on the West coast with no breeze and plenty of sunshine reducing this famed links course to mere parkland variety once minus the Atlantic gale. Shane Grant is Champion of Champions
Sunday saw the 30 various singles competition winners compete in the champion of champions finale kindly sponsored by Gerry McShane of Trinity Print. The heavy rain all week may have been of great benefit to the grading, seeding, fertilizing and sanding which was carried out to the greens but it left underfoot conditions tricky .It was early starter Shane Grant (11) who caught the worm as his return of 41 points could not be bettered by any of the remaining players. Seamus McGivern (19) is the 2009 matchplay champion following his 3/1 win over Mark Keogh (9) in the final. Seamus played some very good golf throughout the rounds of the competition making the utmost of his shot allowance to negotiate some stiff hurdles not least Mark in the final.Seamus began with a win over Anthony Hillen before claiming the scalp of David Pilkington in the next round. Father Pips Son for Last Monthly Medal
First out on Sunday morning young Christopher McKay (18) despite a horrible 8 at the opening hole returned a nett 67 to be the clubhouse leader. Throughout the morning as the wind changed direction to back nine was becoming extremely difficult and the 67 was looking good. A pair of 69's from Robbie Norton and Shane Collins were the nearest to come to leader Christopher until his dad stepped into the picture.Read more
History Makers
The Cloverhill Sam Rutherford made a bit history on Sunday by becoming the first ever club to retain the title. Winners last year in the final against Lisburn, Cloverhill completed the double by defeating Mannan Castle on Sunday.The path to this second success was smoothed over from a tremendous first leg lead of 10 holes achieved at Mannan. Benny Tierney and David Pilkington won the opening match by four holes to get us off to the perfect start. Read more
Great Day For Lady Captain Ann
Lady Captain Ann Murphy enjoyed a great Captains Day with perfect weather and ideal playing conditions for the large amount of members and visitors who turned out to play. The main interest of course was on the tight competition amongst the lady members vying for the wonderful prize on offer for the winner. Defending title holders Cloverhill have a firm grip on the Sam Rutherford trophy following the first leg of the final played at Mannan Castle.Played in ideal conditions on Saturday afternoon on a course in splendid order it was the home team who registered the first points on the board. The best weather for a couple of months brought the members out in force on Sunday for the category competition. The three category competition brought three first time winners into the winners enclosure after a couple of near misses during the course of the year. Benny Wins Newry Crash Repair Cup
Benny Tierney was the winner of the Michael Concannon sponsored Newry Crash Repair Cup. A strong field of 20 had qualified for Sunday's final by being one of the weekly nine hole winners over the course of the last 20 weeks. Back in the Final
Sam Rutherford title holders Cloverhill are back in the final following their comprehensive semi-final victory over Banbridge. In coming away from Banbridge with a 9 hole lead Joe Pilkington's team had given themselves a great cushion to start the home leg with. There was no messing about with Cloverhill quickly putting the match mathematically beyond their opponents in clinical fashion. Read more
Pairs Champions
Colm Traynor (17) and Steve O Hara (14) are the Cloverhill pairs champions for 2009 following their 4/3 final victory over current Club Captain Nial Smyth (15) and his partner Sean Campbell (11). The match played in a downpour saw the underdogs slip into an early lead which they were never to relinquish. Everytime Nial and Sean made putts to get them back into contention their opponents matched every move. Read more

75 years old Noel R Williams has been crowned Senior Golfer of the Year for the third time in his short six year golfing career Thursday last was the last day of counting competitions in both Golfer of the Year and the Maritime Trophy competition. The Three T's prevention against suicide competition as usual attracted a big field of competitors for this sought after qualifier which also helps a very good cause. The in-form man at the minute Shane Grant kept up his good run as his 43 points jumped him into the lead ahead of Jim Conroy whose 41 had cleared a dozen on the 40 point mark. Read more
Juveniles Reach Last Four
The juvenile Ronan Rafferty team have reached the semi-finals of the competition following their quarter final win over Clones. Having failed on three previous occasions to reach the last four Cloverhill gave themselves a very good chance by picking up eight and a half points at Clones last Thursday. The return leg on Saturday was very much in the balance after 9 holes were completed as we led 3-2. The 5 singles matchplay matches are worth a total of 20 points one for each nine and two for the overall match. Read more
Remarkable Recoveries
The last two surviving inter-club teams the juvenile Ronan Rafferty squad and the Sam Rutherford holders were in very grave danger of exiting both competitions following disastrous away leg performances. The juvenile team captained by Miceal McGuinness with Nial Smyth, Ryan McGivern , Christopher McKay and Christopher Lynch on board trailed 16-4 after the first leg. With 4 points on offer in each of the 5 matches (1 each nine, 2 overall) the visitors only needed 5 points to go through. Read more
Colin Claims Captains Prize
It all began on Thursday as Cloverhill Captain Nial Smyth got his Captains weekend of competitions off to a start with his prize for the Senior members. As was to be the norm during play for the duration of competitions, heavy showers would accompany the players during the course of their game. Far from dampening enthusiasm the rain helped the scoring by taking the fire out of the ground. Read more

Taking a one hole lead into the home leg on Sunday the Sam Rutherford team sporting three changes from the team on duty in Portadown swept to a very comfortable victory. Holding a slender 12-8 lead from the home leg on Friday, Cloverhill juvenile Ronan Rafferty headed to Banbridge more in hope than expectation for the second leg on Sunday. Having given debuts to Conor McShane and Christopher Lynch in the home leg alongside team captain Micheal McGuinness, Neil Smyth and Christopher McKay to win the home leg against such a strong Banbridge outfit was considered a huge bonus. Phil Mallon has the round of his life
Phil Mallon produced the round of his life on Sunday morning to run away with first prize in the Fr Kevin Cullen sponsored GOY singles stableford competition. A weekly competition supporter this years and amongst the early starters every week Phil after years in the doldrums gave the handicap convenor plenty to work with as he produced a stunning return of 51 points off the maximum handicap that has been accumulated after years of not troubling the winners podium. An odd good nine here and there was produced but it all came together for Phil for the 18 holes on Sunday.Read more
Holmpatrick Cup
The Holmpatrick Cup qualifier which aids the National Council for the Blind brought a huge entry. The success of last year's representatives Jim McKay and David Pilkington in annexing the Armagh and Ulster titles resulting in an all expenses paid 3 day trip to St Andrews no doubt responsible for the big entry. The fourball better ball competition off three quarters of the handicap saw some very good scores returned in testing conditions. Read more

Inter Club Sucess
The Jimmy Bruen team got a weekend of inter-club golf off to a terrific start on Friday at Kilkeel when they defeated Warrenpoint in the matchplay stages of the competition. Cloverhill the leading qualifier at the venue franked that form by winning against a club steeped in Bruen history. .Read more
Pierce Purcell Qualifers
The Pierce Purcell team brought more success to the club when they clinched the fourth qualifying spot behind Tandragee, our neighbors Ashfield and the host club Portadown on Sunday. This is the first time the club has qualified for the Pierce Purcell so well done to team.Read more
Jimmy Bruen Leading Qualifers
The current well being of golf at the club was enhanced by the performance of our Jimmy Bruen team who emerged as leading qualifiers at Kilkeel. The team of Colin Pilkington, Daniel Hughes, Michael McEntegart, Miceal McGuinness, Benny Tierney, Paul Owens, Mickey Concannon, Sean Campbell, Jim McKay and Joe Mackin returned a best 4 card score of 336 to finish ahead of Kilkeel (340), Mannan Castle (342) and Warrenpoint (345).Read more
SEAN WINS APRIL MEDAL
Sean Campbell (11) was the winner of the April Medal competition with a nett return of 63 to win on the countback from Joe Mackin (14) as the pair finished two shots clear of Seamus McGivern who filled third place. 76 teams representative of 14 different golf clubs took part in the club classic over the Easter weekend. The three person team event with 2 scores counting at 16 holes and all three at holes 4 & 13 produced some good scoring. Read more
Fourball Better Ball
The fourball better ball weekend competition was a closely contested affair with some very good scores returned. Three birdies in the back nine helped taxi Joe Macken (11) and Noel Magill (20) cross the finish line in first place with a total of 46 points, 22 out 24 in. Read more
March Medal
The first of the eight monthly medal competitions attracted a great entry as a follow on to last weeks turnout for the Drive-in. The early pace was set by Ivan Whelan (18) who was the clubhouse leader with a nett 68.The battle in one fourball ended even as Mickey Concannon (8) and Jim McKay (6) came in with 67’s to take the lead. The Captains Drive-In on Sunday was without doubt the biggest and most successful since the formation of the club. Once the ceremonial drives were excellently dispatched down the first fairway despite the presence of the large crowd and cameras it was time to get the scramble underway. Read more
Colm Traynor Takes Control
Producing the best round of his life Colm Traynor (21) shot to the top of the leaderboard with one week remaining in the Spring League. Colm produced 3 birdies and 8 pars for a total of 47 points which puts him six points clear of Joe Carroll in the individual competition. Read more

Ivan Whelan finished his round off well with three solid pars to give him 21 points on the back nine and a total of 40 points which was good enough to top the scoring charts on week three of the Spring League. Read more

Following the opening two rounds of the 10 team Spring League there is very little between the leading four teams. With the best 5 out of 6 cards to count each week for the team event only 3 points separates the top four. Read more
Spring League
The harsh week’s weather of snow and frost has left Cloverhill looking like an alpine ski resort with snowcapped Slieve Gullion in the background as inviting as anywhere to descend. Needless to say there was no golf leaving the last week of the eclectic competition and the opening week of the individual and team Spring league overlapping this week with the one card qualifying for the two competitions. The Spring league will run from Monday Feb 9 right through to Sunday March 15. Read more

There has been tremendous interest in the 18 hole Eclectic competition that has run in conjunction with the 12 hole stableford competition. With only one week remaining to play it could not be more delicately poised with some 20 players within a half dozen shots of leader Joe Mackin. Read more

The early skift of snow on Sunday morning did not deter the golfers especially the Dundalk contingent as the battle for supremacy in the 18 hole eclectic intensifies. With no fewer than 8 players from Dundalk in the top ten on the leaderboard at present they are very keen regardless of weather conditions to get out and try improve their score. Read more

The change in temperature saw the frost replaced by light rain on Sunday morning but it did not dampen the enthusiasm. The early starters played the full 18 holes in the eclectic competition but as the rain got heavier the later players just clocked in the 12 holes for the stableford competition. Read more
Captain Gene McKevitt
Sad news reached the club on Saturday morning with the news that past Captain Gene McKevitt had passed away the night before. Gene an inaugural committee member worked tirelessly in the establishment of the club and was installed as Captain in 2001. The suddenness of his passing came as quite a shock as he adorned the fairways a couple of weeks before and was looking forward to the 2009 season. A frost free Sunday morning brought the players out early with the match an added addition. The competition for the Christmas dinner was very competitive with only two points separating 14 players. Top of the pile was Raymond Flynn with 43 points one better than runner up Mark Hughes. Read more

It was a case of “the glorious thirteenth” for club captain Peter Byrne as the weather was magnificent as he hosted a marvellous Captains Day. With the course in pristine condition the members teed off from 7am until 12-30 pm in search of one of the 12 places that would get you to the last 9 holes in pursuit of the wonderful crystal prize that awaited the overall winner. Noel Sails To Victory
Former club and ships Captain Noel Williams sailed to victory in the Sunday suingles stableford competition. The sprightly 74 year old who is master in chief of the clubs senior section as well as doubling up as club secretary produced a scintillating round of golf that saw him amass 46 points. Terrific Treble For Club
For the first time in the short history of the club we have three teams through to the last 8 of inter-club competitions following a terrific week away from home for the club. The juveniles took on a very formidable Armagh in the Ronan Rafferty at home on Tuesday and took a 14.1/2 to 5.1/2 lead for the return leg in Armagh on Friday. Minus the services of Stephen Coleman for the visit to Armagh team Captain Nial Smyth was able to draft in a very able replacement in Christopher McKay. Read more....

The good weather over both holiday weekends certainly brought the golfers out from hibernation with the course very busy with members and green fees availing of the conditions. President Par Putts Performance
Club President Seamus McCoy produced the performance of a lifetime as he putted his way to 12 consecutive par’s in the second round of the 12 hole Spring League .Seamus was in sparkling form as he watched putt after putt find the bottom of the cup from varying distances for an untouchable return of 35 points. Sean Campbell Is First Winner
Sean Campbell is the first competition winner of 2008 at Cloverhill. Sean won the eclectic competition on the countback after he had finished tied with Miceal McGuinness on 11 under par. Mark Keogh was back in third spot with Michael Concannon fourth. Read more......
Competitive Action for 2008
There will be plenty of competitive action for Cloverhill members for 2008 with the club taking part in no fewer than 11 inter-club competitions governed by both the GUI and Cowdy associations. Heavy Rain Cancelled Golf
No golf at the week end because of the heavy rain. On Thursday the seniors had the third week of turkey competition with the honours going to Brendan Brown and Peter McCreesh. The seniors will be back in action at 10-30 am this Thursday. Read more......

It has been hailed as the best AGM in the clubs brief history with plenty of positive input from the large attendance. The meeting also brought change at the top table with both the Secretary and Treasurer both stepping down. Jim Strikes Gold
The sextet of Medal winners Michael McGuinness, Jim McKay, Frank Quinn, Raymond Martin, Mark Hughes and Joe Hazzard played in the final for the gold medal. A week after claiming the Golfer of the Year title the very consistent 6 handicapper Jim McKay became the winner of the Gold Medal. A nett level par 69 was good enough to take the title but only just on a countback from Mark Hughes also returned a nett 69 but the 10 footer for par on 18 by Jim was the most important putt of the day. Jim who has been a model of consistency all year has produced some great golf as has runner-up Mark who has shown terrific improvement in this his second year of golf. Read more......

Prenchman Franck Pelissou followed up his recent Presidents prize win by capturing the Coleman Properties sponsored singles stableford on Sunday. Fresh from jibing everyone in the clubhouse following France’s win in the rugby Franck took to the fairways where he once again produced the goods over the back nine hole to lead him to success. Frank Pellisou Wins Presidents Prize
President Mr Seamus McCoy enjoyed a most successful weekend with very large numbers participating for his prizes in mens, ladies and juvenile sections. Once again the top competitions attracted the best entries and also produced great competitiveness and scores. On Saturday morning the juveniles took to the fairways to begin proceedings and set the standards. Mark Garvey visited the winners enclosure for the first time this season followed by Christopher McKay with Conor McShane finishing third. The juvenile coaching these players are receiving is beginning to reap the rewards. The ladies were next into the fray where the winner was Anne Murphy with Mary Toal in second place. Read more......
Great Success
The Open 4 person club classic held over two days Saturday and Sunday was a great success with teams from far and wide participating in the two tier competition for GUI and non-GUI golfers. With the course in terrific shape the by now ever present rain on Sunday did not dampen the enthusiasm as the battle for the coveted Cuchulainn Crystal sponsored prizes heated up. Read more......

The 4 person club classic on Sunday August 12 was postponed due to the weather. To facilitate the large entry for the Cuchulainn Crystal Sponsored classic It will now be held over two days Saturday 1 and Sunday Sept 2 There are two tiers of prizes with GUI teams playing off the White markers and those with society handicaps playing off the Green markers. The Global Handling sponsored Stableford competition takes place next Sunday with a large entry already on the sheet for this Golfer of the Year competition. Club President Seamus McCoy will be hosting his day on Sunday Sept 9.
The Newry Crash Repair Wednesday Cup Final is on August 29. The shotgun start 18 hole final will have a 5-30 assembly for the 5-45 start. The draw and holes for the 18 qualifiers is as follows. Best wishes and a speed recovery to committee member Vincie Gorman who got hurt in an accident. At least the injury will not stop you entertaining us with your singing. But before the accident Vincie became the new name on the Seniors matchplay trophy following his 3/2 win over Gerry McShane.
There was consolation for Gerry as his triple dream died as he became the new name on the Seniors Maratime Trophy. Gerry was a clear winner from Fr Kevin Cullen who has a hat-trick of wins in the event. Gerry is also leading in the Senior Golfer of the Year with two rounds to go.

At Cloverhill Golf Club it was the Captains Day on Sunday and there was no more fitting tribute to the very popular captain, Noel R. Williams, than that paid by members and guests who turned out in large numbers to both play and attend his presentation evening and, needless to say, the event lasted until the wee small hours of Monday.
